Netflix

Netflix is an entertainment service specialised in providing the ability to stream a broad catalogue of films and TV shows. The subscription-based service is the biggest in the world, making it key for them to have a diverse library of content to fulfil the tastes and preferences of customers all around the globe.

The bold, red topography of the logo is highly distinctive and connotes the captivating excitement that Netflix aspires to deliver with its entertainment services.

Netflix intends to appeal to the masses. All ages can watch Netflix and includes a separate account for children as a safety precaution to remove any 12+ shows or movies from their search engine. Through the home page, it is visible that Netflix takes pride in their ability to cater to every genre and have content suitable for every individual interest through consistently adding on their own movies and shows with a combination of general movies and shows they’ve obtained rights for. This is effective as the image of a selection of different options highlights some of their most popular content to entice an audience in as they’ll recognise certain titles.

Once entering the platform, the structure of the page represents a grid. Each line falls under a different category or genre. Through their algorithm, Netflix is able to understand the user's tastes and preferences based on their previous watches. This allows personalisation of the categories prominent on the page, as they may recommend certain titles that the user is likely to enjoy based on their history. This ensures that the experience is tailored and that the user is able to find something that they personally enjoy, making Netflix successful in their recommendation and purpose to entertain.

The navigation bar at the top of the page allows clear categories such as "Series" and"Films" to tailor their searches for something to watch. The navigation throughout the page is effective as this structure is easily browsed through if users don’t have a specific thing in mind. If hovering over something, a pop-up appears with a small clip or trailer. This is effective as it helps to promote a movie and builds up an idea of the plot through key words such as “Ensemble”. The plus button featured underneath the rectangle where the trailer plays allows the user to add the project to their to-watch list.

The layout of the page is minimalist, with the visual focus being purely on the content and encouraging the browsing of these choices. The posters used for each title has a high-quality image of presumably the main character(s) alongside the title. This aims to gain recognition or spike interest in the browser. The category "Only on Netflix" draws attention to their exclusive content, building differentiation against competitors that have less successful original titles.

The 'Top 10' section emphasises on new additions that are trending in the user's local area. This promotes their fresh content as the popularity of these titles may intrigue users and hope that their curiosity will cause them to try out the titles that other people are enjoying.
